Suede Texture

Hi There! I’ve been asked to make a Desert Boot cake. Any bright ideas on how to achieve a rough suede effect on fondant. beige/neutral in colour?
TIA

Thanks, madeitwithlove, I loved the effect on your cake, however the colour is the problem…..needs to be neutral.

It can still be done in the same way but using a neutral dust on a neutral covered cake. What type of neutral are you planning? Since it’s a desert boot is it verging on a sand colour? In which case you’ll probably require yellows, browns and gold dusts to give contrasting shades which mimick the texture of suede.

Instead of steaming you can also do it by applying a thin coating of white vegetable shortening over the surface of the cake then stippling it with dust. See how to apply thin coating of shortening in the following youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoCjQoVeR2E
….. after the shortening is applied, stipple the cake with dusts. It will help if you use start with a background of a similar colour or slightly lighter to that of the dust. Set the colour by giving the cake a wafting of steam. Do a trial on a small dummy cake to see effects before attempting the real deal.
