Rice Krispy Treats

Hi all, has anyone made their own to model bits of their cake (as in USA cake shows).  I’ve seen a few recipes on the internet but would prefer first hand advice.  I saw some for sale at Excel show this year but cannot find it for sale in the UK.  I have emailed the makers for advice on where  to buy but no reply as yet.  I also think it would be cheaper to make your own (if it works,lol)

I have also used the usual chocolate crispies with melted chocolate and rice crispies to make stands for a football stadium and turrets for a princess castle and once set it is a bit easier to cut and a lot less sticky than the marshmallow option. Both work quite well.

they are very yummy Jayess, i do nibble but only on the ones left over at the end, not much left ,just a few as i tend to use most of them on whatever im sculpting 🙂  Treacle

We made the standard rice crispy treat recipe using marshmallow, butter and rice crispy cereal  (found on the internet) for the Ben 10 Car on this novelty cake and also on the blocks  –  It turned out great especially as it was the first novelty cake we have ever tried)

Hi treacle (and everyone else),  I used your recipe but don’t know if I made an error melting in the microwave (did I over heat it).  It was a very stringy mixture much like cheese on a pizza!  Is it supposed to be like this?  Anyway it tasted fine and worked for what I wanted (R2D2’s legs).  Thanks for everyone’s help.

hello i use mary berry’s caramel krispy recipe (from her cake book) to mould shapes and then cover in fondant, it works really well! i spray mould with spray oil or butter to avoid the stick but the mixture is quite good for moulding and cutting!

Hi I have used this also but I found I couldn’t shape it as it just stuck to my hands and was very messy. Should I oil my hands first? : )

Using a little oil or trex helps a lot but don’t over do it because the krispies become too greasy and won’t hold together very well.

Treats can be frozen. Wrap them up tight in cling film and put in airtight container. To defrost leave on the counter and leave until completely defrosted.

madeitwithlove, if I make some treats, wrap well in cling film and put in an airtight container how long do you think it will stay fresh without freezing?

I made some for a cake recently but left it until the day before I wanted to ice because I was afraid to make it too soon :o)

I wouldn’t use it much after 2 weeks unrefrigerated. I made a model recently for a friend’s child which was going to kept but ended up being eaten two weeks later! They said it was fine, no reason for me not to believe them. If you keep it in the fridge it will be fine for that length of time. Thanks for the reply madeitwithlove, sorry it’s taken me so long to come back :o)

I want to make a cake topper with it and I guess I was a bit nervous as the Rice Krispie website recipe says it’s best eaten on the day it’s made.

I followed your link and think I’ll be happy now to make it a week in advance, thanks 🙂

this recipe is from Avalon Yarnes and works quite well to hide imperfections as well as hold together-actually I have doubled one of her recipes
Ingredients
10 oz bag of mini marshmallows
6 oz candy melts or chocolate for added stability
8 cups of rice cereal
1-heat marshmallows and candy melts in microwave safe bowl in 30 second increments, stirring until melted
2-add rice cereal and mix until evently incorporated
3-allow to cool until it is warm to the touch and pliable. Use immediately. Coat hands in shortening to help in handling
-You may make these ahead of time. Wrap them tightly in plastic and store them in a zippered plastic bag. Heat them in
the microwave for 20-30 seconds to get them malleable again. You can save the leftovers for future projects.
