Resting cake in fridge

Hi Lots of cake makers seem to advocate leaving cakes 24 hours to settle before decorating which I understand is something to do with gases escaping .However a lot also recommend that the cake is wrapped in cling film and kept in the fridge .Why the fridge ?I was always led to believe that the fridge would dry a cake out .Any ideas please ?

Hi woodysmum

Here’s an answer which may help: https://www.cakeflix.com/questions/fondant-air-bubbles

Wrapping the cake in cling film will keep it moist and also prevent any foodie smells in the fridge mingling in with the cake and filling. Keeping cake in the fridge over a long period of time will dry it out, however for short periods it helps to keep it fresh thus extending shelf life.
