portions debate at home?

Hi all,

This may be an absolutely stupid question.

Ok so if you have a 10” square cake and you cut that in half fill it my guide says it will feed 78 if 2×1 slice

the debate is if you have another 10” square and you cut that in half so its a 10 x 5 cake and put the two half’s together how any people will this feed please ???

Hi AngieS

First of all a 10″ square cake cut into 2 x 1″ pieces will yield 50 portions and not 78. The surface area for a 10″ square is 10 x 10 = 100. The surface area of each portion is 2 x 1 = 2″ sq. 100 divided x 2 = 50. This is assuming the cake height is approximately 2.5″ – 3″. If you fold that in half it would make a 10 x 5″ cake but twice the depth. If you want 2 x1″ portion from the 10 x 5 cake it will yield 25 tall portions. If you cut 1 x 1″ portions you’d get 50 squares. If you need 78 portions out of one cake you would need to bake in a 12 x 13 tin.

Hope this helps.
ps have a look at David’s portions chart here:
