Polystyrene Separators How Much Weight Can They Take?

I am planning on making a four tier wedding cake (12″ fruit, 10” sponge, 8” sponge, 6” fruit) with each tier including the bottom one balanced on polystyrene separators so I will be using 10″, 8″, 6″, and 4″ separators.

My concern is will a 10” polystyrene separator take the weight of a 12” round fruit cake which will weigh approximately 21Lb including marzipan and fondant icing?

Can you please advise me on how much weight these separators can take and should they be dowelled?

Many thanks.

Many thanks for your helpful reply. I have contacted Dummies Direct and they have reassured me that their dummies will be able to take the weight of my cakes and so I have placed an order with them today!
Thank you again!

Hi Clare.W

I can’t advise how much weight each sepator will take. However if you take a peek at the following blog, it explains about dummy cakes/separators and the amount of stress they can endure:

The separtors themselves don’t need to be dowelled. However each tier of cake which the separator will be sitting on must be dowelled as normal using the dowelling method shown in the tutorials. If you wish to dowel the base separator as a safety measure that is fine to do. Hope this makes sense.
