Lustre dust painting on cake

Hi Paul/team,

Please could you let me know if the sugarpaste on a cake needs to dry/harden before painting it with luster dust mixed with alcohol?

Also, is there a ratio formulae between lustre dusts and alcohol (I use Vodka) to be able to paint? I’ve watched some of your tutorials and it seems to be a high percentage of alcohol and yours dry very quickly between layers. Mine take ages. 🙁

Thank you

For best results allow the icing to dry before painting on it. This will provide you with a less absorbant surface and less bleeding. Paul uses 99% food grade alcohol which is brought back from overseas. Food grade alcohol can be purchased on Amazon (not to be mistaken for rubbing alcohol). Rejuenator spirits can be purchased from Cake Stuff: https://www.cake-stuff.com/edibles-c1/essential-edibles-c38/rejuvenator-fluid-c40/cake-stuff-rejuvenator-spirit-fluid-colouring-thinner-275ml-p3705

There is no amount ratio of alcohol to lustre. It just depends on what type of painting being done. Make up the lustre paint accordingly. There are several tutorials on site which show different methods of painting eg
Faye Cahill, Paul Bradford and Raewyn Read tutorials. Vodka is good for painting small areas, it doesn’t dry as quickly because it contains a higher volume water than the foodgrade alcohol, although it does evaporate far more quickly than water. High volume alcohol ( 95%) can also be bought in Polish food stores. I wouldn’t recommend drinking the stuff. Please google this product to be better informed.
