Fingerprints on Fondant

I’m really struggling with this cake! I can’t get a really good finish on my fondant. Am using Couture from Cake Stuff. I have been polishing with the smoothers but getting nowhere. Would love some help with this. thank you

Thanks MIWL – I used smoothers without any great success. Will try the small ball of fondant next. Have now put fondant on all three cakes. Fortunately the tops will have flowers on so it probs won’t show – I think they’re just about good enough.
As for the sides, I just cracked on with it. Yes they slope in slightly but I’m looking for it. Shame is that it’s meant I wasn’t able to get lovely sharp edges on the top (using the upside down method). As I said, I think they’ll be okay. It’s just frustrating because I know I’ve done better cakes. I do wonder whether it’s the different fondant.
Thanks for your help – you’re very kind.

Hi Pen

Soften a small ball of fondant about the size of a walnut and use that to smooth your icing. Let sit for a few minutes first to skins over a bit before using. Another way is to use two smoothers, hold one flat down on the top surface of the cake while you smooth with the other. This way you will avoid making prints on the icing. Have a look at the free tutorials on how to ice a cake and see how Paul does it.
How did you get on with the sides of the cakes?

I’m sure your cakes look wonderful. I’m glad you’ve manage to finish off icing them all. I use Massa fondant and have no experience of the Couture brand, although I do see good reviews for it. I still don’t understand how the cakes ended up with sloping sides. I have had that with sponge cakes but never with fruit. I hope all goes well with the remaining decorations. 🙂
