eating the flowers

Do you advise your clients NOT to eat any flowers given that they are in touch with wire and sprayed with non-edible sheens?

Hi mrpamyz

Flowers which have been wired are not deemed edible so advising the client to that effect is a good plan. If you would like the flowers to be edible leave them unwired. However, gumpaste flowers are not particularly nice to eat. They are hard and not appetising. Chocolate modelling paste tastes great and is an alternative medium to make flowers which can be eaten. They don’t need wiring and can be placed on cakes as soon as they are made. I’m not sure what is meant by non edible sheen. Most glazes used to create sheen in sugarcraft are deemed to be foodgrade.

With every cake I give a list of allergens and non edible parts. So include flowers and also if flowers go into a posy pic so wires do not go into the cake, include that. It is all on the receipt. When they are looking at the cake, they don’t really listen, so best to have it in writing. I always use edible glaze.
