Cake display stands.

Hi. I’ve been given two lovely round pieces of wood, cut straight from a tree to use as a cake stand, but I know I will have to do something with it to make it food safe. I’ve read about putting some sort of sealant on it but I’ve also read about putting it in the oven to kill germs, so I’m a bit confused as to what I should do. Any advice would be great. Thanks x

Hi maisy

Yes, popping them in the oven will get rid of all the bugs and then it can be sealed with butcher’s block sealer. There are a few tutorials online to show how it’s done. Take a peek here:

Perfect thanks. I’ve just watched the video and will get that done, but do you know how long it should be in the oven and what temperature.

I would think on a moderate temperature so not to crack the wood but hot enough to kill the bugs.

I wish I had taken notes at the wood turning demo which I went to a few years back!
