Batman Cake

Hi

I plan to make a batman cake soon and wonder if I should use sugar paste or flower paste for the buildings around the sides of the cake. Any help would be appreciated thanks very much. xx

Hi bellescakes

I think a little tylose or cmc powder mixed in with your sugarpaste would be good. Mix in a little just enough to give the paste some structure so it remains soft enough to eat but not hard like gumpaste which wouldn’t be very nice to crunch on. When I do this I use one teaspoon of tylose to 500g of sugarpaste, this helps strengthen the paste making it easier to handle but does not turn it into gumpaste. If you’re not happy about using the tylose just let your cut out sugarpaste buildings to sit and crust over slightly before adhering them to the cake. xx

I had a last minute batman cake for a friend and no tylose in the house(my dog knocked the container over)- just made them out of fondant and placed them over some plastic buckets the same size as the cake to dry over night. The next day, I buttercreamed the cake, put the fondant on, placed the buildings around with water, the insignia on top, finished decorating the windows and such, and off we went.
