Are cakes still zero rated for VAT?

hi. Iv just registered my business and am wondering if cakes are still zero rated for VAT and if it’s still recommended to register for vat ASAP as your pro video was 4 years ago.

Many thanks

Hi cheekyjuju

Definitely register for VAT straight away. Cake is zero rated if you buy it in a shop of any description, including a takeout cafe eg Costas, provided it is not consumed on the premises. VAT is only added if you sit in to eat it.
As a home baker VAT is not applicable unless you have a tea-room attached and are registered for VAT.
