Applying brush embroidery to pearlized fondant

I’m trying to add brush embroidery lace to a fondant cake that has been coated in a pearl/gold luster finish. Will it stick? Should I use royal icing or buttercream for the lace?

Hi carjen2701

I’m not quite sure what you mean. Do you want to make brush embroidery onto the cake? If that is so, it can be done on a lustred cake. If you’ve made independent pieces of lace and want to stick them on, it would be best to use a little royal icing as glue. Please let me know if I’m understanding your question correctly.

Thanks. Yes, I want to pipe and do the brush embroidery directly on the cake once it has the lustre applied. I was just worried it might not stick. I’ve only done it with buttercream on plain fondant before. I was wondering if I should be using royal icing for the decoration not buttercream.

I’m not sure how it would come out with buttercream, I’ve never done it with that medium. However, if you feel comfortable with it, try a little as a practice run. Did you see Faye Cahill’s shimmering cake tutorial? She makes brush embroidery directly on her lustred cake. See the tutorial here, it’s absolutely beautiful:
