Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reveal royal wedding cake

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle make the most important decision for their wedding… the cake!!!

Prince Harry and bride to be Meghan Markle have revealed the plans for their wedding cake. The loved-up couple are set to tie the knot at Windsor Castle on the 19th of May. However, they have opted for a different type of cake than the traditional royal choice of a fruit cake.

A different choice of cake…

Instead of the traditional fruitcake, the couple has decided to go for a buttercream cake decorated with fresh flowers.

Kensington Palace has said that Harry and Meghan are “looking forward to sharing” the cake with their wedding guests later this spring.

Who will be making the cake?

Californian chef and food writer Claire Ptak has been tasked with the couple’s cake. Originally from California, Claire now runs the Violet Bakery in East London. She has said that she feels privileged to be chosen and believes she shares similar views on food and taste to the couple.

“Knowing that they really share the same values as I do about food provenance, sustainability, seasonality and most importantly flavour, makes this the most exciting event to be a part of.”

After working as a pastry chef at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California. Claire moved to the UK where she worked at the Anchor and Hope gastropub in Waterloo. Before setting up the Violet Bakery in East London.

Royal wedding cakes from the past…

Before Queen Victoria’s wedding in 1840, wedding cakes were not considered an important part of a royal wedding. With guest usually being offered ‘bride pie’ instead.

However, Victoria’s wedding cake changed all this. Complete with a figure of Britannia blessing her and her husband Prince Albert, Victoria’s cake weighed a whopping 300 pounds. A slice of the phenomenal cake sold for £1,500 in a 2016 auction. You can find out more about the history of royal wedding cakes in the video above.
