10 incredible bakeries you absolutely have to visit!

Let’s be honest, we all have a sweet tooth or else we wouldn’t be here and if you’re like me, you just crave the aromas that welcome you the moment you walk into a bakery. There’s nothing quite like it. The smell of a freshly baked loaf of bread, croissant, cinnamon roll, cookie, muffin and all things pastry is simply intoxicating! The smell always brings back a slice of my childhood – a very sweet one…

But every bakery is different. If you are a regular bakery visitor, you’ll know by now that a good bakery produces a signature product; something they make very well and want to be known for. So when you get a craving for that special something, you’ll know exactly where to go and what to get. Today, we would like to request that you broaden your horizons a little, as we introduce you to 10 incredible bakeries that we feel you absolutely have to visit! Each and every one of these is known for something exciting and different:

Du Pain et Des Idées, Paris – France

Stop number 1, a wonderfully rustic boulangerie. It is particularly well known for its incredible croissant and vast flavour range of escargot. Traditional and tasty – a winning combination.

Demel, Vienna – Austria

Stop number 2 brings us to the vibrant city of Vienna in Austria. Demel opened its doors to the public in 1888 and has ever since been serving delicious cream cakes, scones, and strudels amongst other delicacies. Well worth a stop if you find yourself there!

Conditori La Glace, Copenhagen – Denmark

Next up… we take a detour to one of the nordic countries. Conditori La Glace is a Danish bakery that was established back in 1870!  Looking at  the cakes simply makes your mouth water…I dare you not to try them if you find yourself in Copenhagen.

Pasticceria Marchesi, Milan – Italy

Milan is not only the capital of fashion, it is also the home of Pasticceria Marchesi. Founded in 1824, it combines 5-star service with its guilty pleasures, including chocolates, brioche bread  and cakes! You better pay it a visit… or it’s your loss!

E5 Bakehouse, London – UK

Well, the ingredients are organic, locally sourced and they produce a heck of a sourdough bread! If  that hasn’t enticed you the cakes and other pastry delicacies will certainly do so. Beautifully handcrafted products in a stripped back railway arch cafe. Need we say more to make you visit?

Pastéis de Belém, Belém – Portugal

Pastéis de Belém has been serving up amazing treats since 1837 and it’s easy to see why it’s still here today. Located in Belem, they produce goodies I can’t really pronounce, and look simply incredible! Colorful, varied and tasty…

Bakerbots, Toronto – Canada

Time to leave Europe behind and expand our horizons a little and Bakerbots in Toronto is the next amazing stop in our journey. They make scrumptious, pies, cookies, tarts and loads more for you to sink your teeth into. OK, they may not have opened in the 1800’s but they will be every bit as addictive and did I mention they make their own ice-cream that they cram into the treats?!

Bourke Street Bakery, Sydney – Australia

From “down under” (for some of us), comes a bakery that opened its doors in 2004 and has been filling people’s life with sweetness every since. They offer a vast array of wonderfully fresh baked goods including cakes, tarts, pastries and even serve some food specials. You’d be a fool to miss out and there’s no excuse as they are now open in multiple locations.

Tartine Bakery, San Fransisco – USA

Another place where you are guaranteed a sugar high and the pastries, cakes, and tarts vary with the seasons, (just like they should!). Besides the sweet treats, Tartine Bakery in San Fransisco bakes beautifully fresh bread that is guaranteed to make ya drool.  The best part is they also fulfill special orders for their customers.

Breads Bakery, New York City – USA

One of North America’s most bustling cities, our next stop is Breads Bakery in New York City. You would have never guessed it by the name but this place makes awesome bread…and a lot of other things to be honest! Try their chocolate babka, cookies and different croissants guaranteed to make your head spin with sugary goodness.

And…so our journey comes to an end! Hopefully it’s been a deliciously enticing one and we’ve given you some inspiration on great bakeries to visit wherever you are and whatever you’re doing. Remember, it’s never too late for a delicious treat or some freshly baked, crusty bread.
