Stacking, fruit cake above sponge?

I have been asked for a cake with the fruit cake smaller than the sponge cake…so the heavy fruit cake will be above the lighter sponge, will this be ok, how many dowels will I need.
Thanks for your help

Hello Sue-Wales

I’ve just done exactly this on a 4 tier cake with the smallest cake, fruit, at the top. My cake was 4″ fruit on top of 6″ lemon sponge using Paul’s method of 9 dowels. If you can stack on the day of the event it gives you more peace of mind, however as I’ve said mine was very secure, no sinking or moving at all.
