Please can I have tip on sticking silver leaf to a cake as mine comes off in strips not as a solid block

Faye Cahill shows how to apply silver leaf to cake in the shimmering lace cake tutorial. The two part tutorial can be seen here:

To aid sticking, I find it helps to smear a tiny amount of shortening over the surface of the cake. Using a large round soft headed brush helps to smooth the leaf out without too many cringles.
