Ruby red fondant

Hi, I have made the vintage car in Renshaws Ruby red, I brushed it with rejunvenator to get rid of the corn flour marks, got up this morning and it has now got an orange tinge to it. Is there anything I can do to get the ruby colour back before I spray it with clear varnish ?
Thank you for any advise

Hi Sandra

How big an area has been affected and where is it? The orange tinge may be a result of the rejuventator spirit re-acting with the flour. I don’t use cornflour, however in the past I have experienced a water ring effect rather than a tinge. To get rid of it I wash the area gently with vodka, let it dry completely and then dust with petal dust same colour as the fondant. Steam the dusted area to set the colour because that gives a better indication that both colours match. If it’s just a very small area you could make a paste from the Renshaw’s ruby and carefully blend it into the affected area with a soft, flat just damp brush. Let it dry and use smoother to smooth it in.

If you would like to try any of the above ideas it’s best to select a small area to try on. If all fails, I would suggest re- icing worst affected part with a very thin layer of sugarpaste.
The vintage car is quite a large area, is it be possible after trying the above suggestions that the car can be placed best side forward?

Hi, thank you for your advice, I have just come home and nearly all the car has been affected and I have not got time to re do it as its for a competition on Wednesday. I have been and bought some ruby food colouring and mixed it with some vodka and tried a small square at the back where the suitcase will go and it looks fine as its drying. I think all I can do is paint all the car and spray with pme clear glaze and hope for the best. Anything will look better than the yellow tinge ! Its strange as I used the rejuvenator on the Beetle car and had no problems but this ruby fondant left a orange red tint in the plastic bag and on my rolling pin, so maybe there was something wrong with the paste

Hi Sandra

Thank you for sharing your method of repairing spoiled colour. I hope it’s worked well and the colour has held in tact. After I answered your question I remembered there was something else similar asked some while ago. Although not exactly the same as your problem, the fading or tinging explanation is probably to do with how the dyes are made up and the effects ultra violet light can have. For a better explanation take a peek at the set link here:

Hope competition goes well on Wednesday. Good luck! x

Hi madeitwithlove, thank you for your help, I mixed the red color gel with vodka and painted the whole cake, painted the seats with chestnut and vodka and it turned out lovely and vintage and realistic looking but did need a lot of extra bits on it, however because I had to wait for it to dry overnight I ran out of time. I managed to get a silver in the LACA Finishin g touches novelty cake compitition. Funny thing was the judges wanted to know how I got such a good finish on the cake ! but wanted to see more detail

Thank you, I posted a picture on Pauls facebook page so that you can see the finished colour but I cant see it on there, I will have a look at the google page and put it on there, thanks again for your help and advice.
As soon as I mentioned Ruby red and sunshine the Judge new straight away and asked me if the colour lifted so this must be known problem, we have learnt something new ! and how to fix it 🙂

That’s so good to know. I think you’re right it must be a known problem and it is probably to do with the ultra violet rays. Anyway, all’s well that ends well. I’ll look out for your picture. xx
