Ridged Cake

Hi Cakemakers hope you can help I wish I could add an image but I will try and describe it, a deep round cake that looks like either cigarillos or matchmakers all round the sides only the vertical ridges are indented into the sugarpaste. I don’t want to risk indenting with a ruler as I don’t think it would be perfect do you know of any tool or embosser that would give me the even ridges. Thank you.

Hello susanoneil

If you google ‘Jem strip cutters’ you’ll see different width size Jem strip cutters which could also be used to indent icing at equal distance. The strip cutters can be quite sharp even though they are plastic so care should be taken how deep the tool is pressed into the icing. This link might take you to google, if not just google it yourself. Hope it helps.

Hi
Try a ribbed or smocking rolling pin. Don’t know if the ridges would be too small though.

Thank you Essenceofcake and madeitwithlove, I have now ordered a No. 3 Jem strip cutter and will use this to mark the ridges and can then indent them. I think I will practice this on a cake dummy first. xxx

You could also mark off the distance acurately as shown in this blog:

Although the blog talks about irregular verticle lines, regular lines can be measured and marked off in exactly the same way.
Glad you manage to order your Jem cutter, good idea of yours to practice on a dummy first.
