How far in advance could I use milk choc ganache on a chocolate celebration cake which is then iced? i need to allow as much time as possible after this to then decorate before the party. Could I refrigerate a ganached cake a day before decorating to allow me a breather?

As long as your chocolate cake has a good shelf life the ganache should be fine for several days at a cool room temperature. The ganached cake can be kept in the fridge, keep it in a cake box so it doesn’t dry out or absorb foodie smells.
