i am doing a 3 tier cake and the bottom is a fruit cake 12″ square but I dont think its deep enough. Will it look odd if its only 2 to 3 ” high.

Personally it wouldn’t worry me because I think a shallow square cake topped with deeper round tiers looks lovely. However I’m not terribly conventional! How tall are your other tiers? If you want the fruit tier to be taller you could use either a shallow dummy or a couple of square cake drums to give the cake a slight rise. Paul shows how to combine dummies, boards and real cake in several tutorials. I can’t find them at the moment, it’s rather late now but I’ll try and find them in the morning. Perhaps you could have a look as well??
