Man of Steel Airbrushing

Hi, I’m making a Superman sign cake only I want it to look more like the recent ‘man of steel’ symbol which is darker. I have a roller that will create the material pattern but was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to airbrush it to make look darker. Hope that makes sense lol

HI breene

The only way to get the right colour is to keep experimenting by adding the tiniest amounts of different colours to your start colour. You’ll need to get some 3ml disposable pipettes from ebay or Amazon (they’re very cheap) so you can mix small quantities of colour in a controlled way. Keep a note of how many drops of colour you use to achieve your target colour. Once you get the right shade just increase the volume to make enough to cover the symbol.
My hubby and I did this last Christmas, it’s a bit tedious but you may be able to achieve the red quicker than we managed to get our antique brown. Try first with very, very small amounts of either black or navy mixed into red or play around with other colours. Spray in light layers rather than one big bold block.

Thats great thank you. so do you think I should just spray onto white paste or should I use coloured paste?

I think the idea of airbrushing is to add colour to white. and build up. We tend to experiment, sometimes we start with a light background of whatever the colour is. If we want to finish with blue for example, we start with a light blue and build it up. This is the same as water colour techniques. Take a look at how Paul does it here

I’ve got a feeling he may also have used air brushing on the lion face tutorial, not sure.
I’m still trying to get to grips with it but will be worth it once I can get a good basic knowledge.
