Making moulds using pastillage

I have seen a tutorial where someone used pastillage to make head moulds. Typically, I can’t find the tutorial so does anyone know if, once you have made the mould and pastillage has gone hard, do you need to dust the pastillage mould with cornflour or trex to stop the fondant sticking to it? Any advice gratefully received. (I have used the ‘make you own mould’ stuff but don’t particularly rate it). Thanks all.

Hello sarahde

Yes, dust the mould with cornflower as this will prevent the fondant sticking to it. I find icing sugar and trex become absorbed into pastillage so neither, in my experience have made particularly suitable release agents.
Moulds can also be made with any old bits of dried up fondant, crush down and softened. They are good for a short while but pastillage will last much longer. I use the blue silicone plastique and find it very good. However I also like the idea of the reusable mould making gel as seen here:

This does away with having hoards of moulds which probably won’t ever get used again beyond once or twice. Good luck with your pastillage moulds.
