How to stack a cake with delicate designs on the layers

I recently made a cake with cut out leaves and flowers on it. when it came to transfering and stacking the tiers, a number of the flowers and leaves broke off. Also, the fondant hada lot of marks and dents. Please help, what am I doing wrong. thank you.

Hi Sandy
I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago with lace, sequines and rhinestones replicated from the bride’s dress, you have my empathy!
I think the best way to do this is by stacking the cakes first, filling in the joins with a thin filling of royal icing and letting it set over night. then apply the cut out leaves and flowers. Leaving the icing to set overnight would help reduce the amount of hand dents and breakages of the remaining decorations.
I can’t carry stacked cakes, not everbody can. Having already decorated each tier I knew I’d get breakages while stacking at the venue. I took the repair kit plus extra decorations and made more decorations while the bride and groom were doing their thing! I had plenty of time to set up because the wedding breakfast didn’t begin until 4.pm.
