Dragon cake double stack

Hi
Emma talks about double stacking the cakes to make them deep. Did she use any supports in the cake or just dowel the cake when you stack?

Thanks

Hi wardshar

Is it possible you could say which lesson Emma mentions making the cakes deeper?
If it’s stacking the cakes, that is each tier than yes she will have dowelled and stacked in the normal way.
When I do extra tall layer I put a card in between to make it easier for cutting. If the layers are really deep each slice of cake would be huge so a card helps manage the portions. Perhaps that’s what you mean??
I haven’t watched all of the tut yet and don’t know where Emma speaks of this.

It’s in the first lesson after the overview. She just says she has double stacked them. Each cake is 5′ tall she says.

Also, how would you recommend transporting this cake in terms of would you do any stacking of the tiers at the venue as it’s a huge cake? Would I airbrush and make as normal but just not royal ice between the cake cards so I could lift off? Is that at all possible or too risky? Better to transport as a completed cake?

Thanks

I’ve just watched again. She actually doesn’t mention double stacked but she does say each cake is 5″ tall.
Help please !
Thanks

Hi wardshar

I wasn’t sure about this so I phoned Emma this morning to be on the safe side. Here’s what she says:
She has baked thin layers to prevent them drying out. Make enough layers to the size of 5″. Each 2.5″ layer is crumbcoated and dowelled, there is a card to separate it from the next 2.5″ layer. Emma used 4 dowells, north, south east, west leaving the centre for securing both deep layers together with a long dowel.
If you can’t make thin layers make the cakes as you would normally, cut them in half and fill then stack round/square with the supports.
I forgot to ask her about transporting ( door bell went at the crucial time!!). I think if you can carry the weight the cake might be better transported assembled. If you transport the cakes as single tiers the problem I foresee is with the dragon and princess. These were built on the wire armature on the cake and go the length of all 3 tiers. Would you be able to build the models and remove them temporarily for transporting?
If you do transport them as single tiers it would be better to place the middle and top tiers on cake drums for easier handling. Stick them down on the drum and release them before stacking. The cards release from the drum without problem. If you transport fully assembled you’ll need a strong person to help you lift the cakes.
Tall cake boxes are available from online cake decorating suppliers. Some vehicles don’t have the depth in the boot to allow a tall box to sit comfortably and close down the hatch, you would need to make sure this doesn’t happen to you. I use non slip matts under my boxes to prevent shifting. The matts can be bought on rolls so you can cut off the amount required. This is the kind of mats:

Extra padding around the box also helps.
If you assembly at the venue take an ample repair kit including your airbrush in case any of the colour comes off. I say this only because of bitter experience!
I hope some of this makes sense. If not please come back! x

EDIT
Emma will contact David with instructions so this can be made more clear in the addition information tab under the tutorial video. Hope you get on ok. x

Thanks so much for all that. I really appreciate it. I’m in the middle of making it and it’s going soooo we’ll. I’m giddy! I’m only using dummy cakes at the moment but just wanted to know those points I asked you incase I received an order. Can’t wait to show you my photos at the weekend. Thanks to you all.A great site and a great team

Will post on Saturday! Keep a look out!

I’m just about to watch Paul’s bride and groom tutorial (the latest one) for some help on making these two models. I’m going to put these on the cake instead of the dragon and princess. I’m exhibiting at a wedding fair on Sunday so it will have a great showing there!

Thanks

Thanks!! Just to keep you posted…..castle cake looks amazing. I adapted Paul’s tutorial slightly as my bride and groom are sitting.

I’ve just made a Disney Frozen castle cake and used the same techniques as Emma but on a much smaller scale. I’ll post photos soon!

Thanks again for all your help. Really appreciated.
