HI MazW

You’d have to remove the dummy cake first. To do that run your finger around the point where the real cake and dummy meet. You’ll feel a slight ridge which is the board that the dummy is sitting on. With the point of a sharp knife cut all the way round. Warm a palette knife in hot water and slide it under the thin card and gradually work it round until the card separates from the top of the real cake. Remove the dummy, slice the cake up for serving and save the topper as a momento of the ocassion!

Thanks for the reply, that is a good idea to be able to keep the top part! I’ve been asked to make a cake for my friends son, this looks fab! Do people not mind having to do that? If they do mind what could you use as an alternative on the top to hold wires?

You could decorate the dummy the same as the cake but have it as a topper rather than incorporate it into the main cake. I did a similar design to this. Once all the photos were taken the cake was taken into the kitchen out of sight to be dismantled and sliced. You could give your freind a choice of construction and go with what she feels most comfortable with.
