Covering a large square cake

Help!
I have to cover a 12″ square cake which is 5″ deep in sugarpaste. I am worried about ripping and tearing etc and am thinking about covering the sides first and then the top. Would this work OK for when it comes to joining them together so they’re not visible? This is for a wedding and I am working on it today! Thanks in anticipation

Hi suzyq

Panelling a large square cake I find is by far the best and easiest method. There will be a join which unfortunately cannot always be completely smoothed in. What you can do is run a thin line of royal icing along the join and paint it away with a damp brush. This gives a nice neat, acceptable finish. Alternatively you can decorate the join with royal icing or a pretty snail trail.
There is exisitng information and tutorial on the site, take a peek here:

For more information, google ‘how to conceal joins on a square panelled cake’
I would give you more links, however I think you will find it more useful to pick out how to,s and tutorials which you find most helpful.
Good luck with your cake, hope all turns out well. x

Thank you for such a speedy reply. I will take a look at the link, I couldn’t find anything earlier when I looked, but there’s so much on here, it’s sometimes difficult to find! Not that I’m complaining as the advice and info is brilliant. Thanks again and I’ll let you know how it works out, fingers crossed ! x

You’re welcome! The site has got so big now that it is sometimes difficult to find information. The site is being re- built to make searches a lot more simpler which will be of great help. I think tagging questions also helps to keep similar information together when searching. If you are able to go back and tag your question it will go in with others the same, don’t worry if you can’t. Please do post again with your results, it will definitely provide more information which will help other members. x

Just to let you know I’ve finished the cake and although some joins did show, because I was covering some of it with heart shapes, I’ve managed to minimise the lines and I’m pleased with how it’s turned out. It definitely gives it sharper edges too! It was so much easier and less stressful than trying to cover it in one go, so thanks for your help. I don’t know how to tag my question on here, is it easy to do? Thanks again

Hi suzyq

Thank you so much for your feedback. Really happy for you that everything worked out well. Panels do give a lovely sharp finish, it’s my preferred method and the join lines don’t bother me at all.
Don’t worrry about the tagging, it’s done before the question is posted, I didn’t think it could be done afterwards.
When you set a new question again look out for options asking what your question relates to eg question about using the site, baking or it could be some other aspect. Clicking on the options helps to tag the nature of your query and helps it to be placed with similar questions when searched.
Hope everything else goes smoothly to the run up of the wedding. x
