Can you buttercream onto a cake dummy?

Hi all,

Can anyone help please? I have been asked to make a 4 tier cake 2 with red velvet and 2 dummy tiers, all to be finished with a buttercream icing. Is this even possible ? I am not sure if you can buttercream straight on to a dummy or would you need to cover it with a layer of sugar paste first 🙁 Any help would be amazing,

Hello DottyDelicious

I can’t see why not providing the buttercream is the crusting type. Soft buttercream may absorb into the styrofoam. Take a look here for a great discussion on the very thing:

There’s a crusting buttercream receipe here:

Hope it helps
