Cake Stand Varnish

I’m about to order two wooden cake stands for Christmas cakes(Santa and reindeer templates). I was wondering since i will be reusing them for other cakes should a coat of varnish be applied so they are easily washed??Or is it not necessary..?

Hi ATHINA

The problem with varnish is that it can gradually come off little by little and get into your food. The best way to treat wood is with food grade oils. Walnut oil is really good if no one with nut alleries is going to be served from the stand or have a look around in google for ‘food grade mineral oils’. Certain vegetable oils are not suitable because they can become rancid so take care when choosing. The oil is rubbed in to the wood and polished in, in a circular motion. If you do it daily it will eventually form a waterproof barrier to stop the wood from dry and cracking each time it’s washed. Please be sure to select oils which are food grade and not the type that is rubbed into floors and woodwork.

Hope this helps.
