Cake crumbling

I have not long started making cakes but every time I put my buttercream over cake it starts to crumble on sides.
When this happens I get a uneven finish when putting my fondant on.
What’s should I do to stop my cake from falling apart?
Thanks kellie

Hi Kel

Pop the cake in the fridge for about an hour to chill it or in the freezer for about half an hour. You’ll find the chilling will prevent the cake from crumbling and allow you to get a better finish when you crumb coat. Have a look in the free/beginners section at the tutorial where Paul fills and crumb coats a cake with butter cream.

Thanks very much, I will try this on my next attempt. Hopefully will work this time:-)
