I’m making a Gravity defying beer can/glass cake, I’m going to try royal icing, but you could use butter icing etc

Probably not as efficient as royal icing Lesley4. I think it will soften and slide off! How about piping melted white chocolate or white ganache? This would set hard. You could also try 7 minute frosting, lots of recipes for this online, it’s like a marshmallow, meringue frosting made with egg whites and boiled sugar syrup. Whisked until light and fluffy but sets quite hard once piped or spread.
