3D. penguin cake

Have any of you made a 3D penguin cake…similar size to Tatty Teddy?? Can you advise me if this is a practical option…and if so, how?!

I really like the “forgiveness” of piped butter icing…but how on earth would I get the black and white colouring?!

Thanks x

Hi therese1

I think the teddy cake would adapt very well to a penguin. If you search in youtube ‘3 D penguine cake tutorial’ you’ll see a two part tutorial RedPandaGiant. The demonstrator has covered the project with sugarpaste. This could be replaced with buttercream. Here is another http://www.instructables.com/id/3D-Penguin-Birthday-Cake/
This uses a teddy bear cake pan but you could just use it as a guide if you make Paul’s teddy cake.
I’ve seen other tutorials and ‘how to’ guides by googling ‘penguine cake tutorial’.
Making black buttercream can be a little tricky because so much dye is needed. You would need to start with a dark base like chocolate and colour it black. Rainbow Dust Progel black is highly concentrated. I find it gives a good colour using less dye.

It can also be found in any online cake decorating company, ebay, amazon and sometimes in local cake decorating shops.
Another way to make penguin cake would be by following an owl cake tutorial as guide. They are similarly shaped for carving purposes. Hope this helps. x
