Cake Decorating Courses by the Evening News

The Evening News were looking for stories of business growth through these difficult economical times. Since November 2008 we ran pilot cake decorating courses to find out how the students and Paul would enjoy them. Since then things have really taken off. There have been further course dates released which are all filling up quickly.

When we looked at our Management Accounts it became clear that as half our business was driven through wedding cake sales and with the wedding season predominantly May to September we were looking at different opportunities to fill the gap.

Paul had often given presentations at the Women’s Rurals and at various other events. He loved the interaction and teaching people so it seemed the natural step to try running his own courses. From the initial run of pilot courses almost all the students that attended have since come on or signed up for further courses.

A meeting has been arranged next week with with the Scottish Association of Master Bakers to look at the possibility of giving local bakers the opportunity to learn some of the skills of a sugarcraft mastercraftsman.

When the Evening News carried the story Paul regretted talking about how much weight he had put on since opening the business. The first sentence of the article talks him ballooning to 17 stone. Nevertheless as David read the story in stitches of laughter Paul had the last laugh as the picture used had the names the wrong way round! Paul now gets someone else to sample the cakes and has now come back down to 14.5 stone!
